The main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) on Sunday held preliminary elections to determine its candidates to run in the parliamentary elections slated for June 7.

Around 760,000 party members went to the polls in 41 provinces and 45 electoral regions across the country for the CHP's preliminary elections. There was high interest in the party's preliminary elections, with many party members flocking to the polling stations early in the morning.

CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu ran in the preliminary elections from the Aegean province of İzmir, a CHP stronghold, but he cast his vote in Ankara on Sunday. Kılıçdaroğlu, who was elected as a deputy in the 2007 and 2011 parliamentary elections from İstanbul, will seek to be a candidate from İzmir in the June 7 elections.

Other prospective candidates in İzmir asked for support for themselves along with Kılıçdaroğlu. Some of them had banners that read “First 57, then me,” with a reference to the candidacy number of the CHP leader.

Speaking to reporters after casting his vote, Kılıçdaroğlu said his wish from the preliminary elections is for female and young candidates to win.

“Going into the [candidate] list is a result. The important thing is to be a CHP supporter. The important thing is the strengthening of democracy. We want the nation to elect their representatives. The CHP is the only party doing this because we believe in democracy,” he said.

Kılıçdaroğlu said his party does not approve of party leaders fielding candidates.

In Turkey, most political parties are criticized for not having intraparty democracy because parliamentary candidates are mainly determined by the party leader.

CHP Secretary-General Gürsel Tekin, who joined the preliminary elections in İstanbul's Kadıköy district, also spoke to reporters after he cast his vote. Tekin said: “We see this clearly happening on June 8. We went to many places for the preliminary elections. The nation has big expectations from the CHP. God willing, the nation will take a sigh of relief on June 8. Unemployment, poverty and misery will come to an end.”

In the meantime, a CHP party member, Cihan Onur (70), who went to the polling station to cast his vote in the preliminary elections in the western province of Denizli suffered a fatal heart attack after casting his vote at Denizli High School. (Cihan/Today's Zaman)
