CHP Group Deputy Chairman Ali Mahir Başarır, who came to the city yesterday for a series of visits, held a press conference in front of the Yayladağı Customs Gate on the border with Lazkiye, accompanied by 13 deputies. Başarır stated that they are following the events targeting the Alawites in Lazkiye with concern and sadness.
"I CALL ON EVERYONE TO EXERCISE COMMON SENSE"
Başarır explained that the civilians living in Lazkiye have relatives among the citizens of Hatay's Defne and Samandağ districts, saying, "I call on everyone to exercise common sense and to make sensible statements. We wanted the humanitarian security corridor to be opened yesterday, and we are saying the same thing today. Our stance in foreign policy is clear. It is to ensure the territorial integrity of our neighbors, their administrative integrity, and to be governed within democracy. We have not intervened until today, and we will not intervene today either. As you can see, this has not benefited Syria, the Middle East, or humanity. Muslims have killed each other. We must think about the safety of our neighbors, Muslims of any sect, not the imperial powers," he said.
THE BALANCE IN LAZKIYE AND ITS SURROUNDINGS IS QUITE HEAVY
The death toll from the events in Lazkiye and its surroundings in Syria is increasing. According to a statement from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the death toll has exceeded a thousand. It was recorded that more than 700 of the deceased were killed by gunfire at close range. It was reported that 148 pro-Assad elements and 125 members of the Syrian government forces were killed in the clashes.
WHAT HAD HAPPENED?
In an attack carried out by the elements of the deposed Assad regime in the Ceble district of Lazkiye on March 6, at least 11 security personnel lost their lives. Following the attack, the Syrian army dispatched reinforcement units consisting of hundreds of vehicles, including tanks, armored personnel carriers, and multiple rocket launchers, to the provinces of Lazkiye and Tartus, and launched operations to capture the elements of the deposed regime in the region. At least 50 security personnel lost their lives during the operations, while international media and social media reported news and images of some armed groups targeting numerous civilians in the area.
