CHP Report On Ermenek Mine Focuses On Dire Labor Conditions

Main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu has expressed his sorrow over statements that hopes for the rescue of 18 miners trapped in a mine in Ermenek, a district of Karaman province, are fading, while a CHP deputy has prepared a report alleging that negligence was the cause of the accident.

Speaking about the mine disaster that trapped 18 miners on Thursday, Kılıçdaroğlu said: "I am really stricken with grief over the remarks that little hope remains for the workers' rescue. Also, members of the government are always the first to rush to the disaster scenes."

"Many people are visiting the area. The president, the prime minister and other officials… But this has no meaning after such a tragedy has happened. If an honest engineer had been dispatched to the mine, before the occurrence of such an incident, for a proper inspection, then no one would have died. After people have lost their lives, they [government officials] are among the first to go to the disaster area. This is completely hypocritical," he added.

CHP İstanbul deputy Umut Oran also slammed the government and the mine operator, saying the tragedy had been foreseen and was not an accident.

“The flooding happened due to insufficient [safety] measures. It is a flood that was entirely foreseen. The chief responsible for what occurred here is the prime minister himself. Since 2012, the Prime Minister's Office has issued mining permits. The main responsibility for the disaster lies with [President Recep Tayyip] Erdoğan and [Prime Minister Ahmet] Davutoğlu, who is following his [Erdoğan's] dirty legacy,” Oran said.

After observing the operation to rescue the trapped miners, Oran prepared a report called "Ermenek," noting the deficiencies he has observed.

“When I entered the mine, I was faced with terrible conditions. There was no sign of work safety in the mine. Not a single indication of it. The right word to describe the conditions was 'inhumane.' The miners have been forced to work in primitive and terrible working conditions. Also, the machines that were to pump the water out were not unloaded for hours due to security reasons prior to Erdoğan's arrival at the mine, delaying the rescue work," Oran underscored.

The report also pointed out that the workers were being exploited and doomed to terrible working conditions, with their employer taking advantage of the lack of other work.

"The workers were deprived of the right to have lunch provided by the company, and shuttles [transporting them to and from work] were canceled. Also, cutting their daily payments if they fail to mine a sufficient amount of coal is unacceptable. Another issue that I should mention is the lack of sufficient preparation to drain the water in the mine. Until yesterday evening [Wednesday], a suitable pump could not be brought, revealing the inability to respond to such a crisis," Oran underlined.
