Main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu will soon be visiting Iran in an attempt to find out more about last year's Dec. 17 corruption scandal which implicated members of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) along with a number of Iranian businessman, the Taraf daily reported.

Kılıçdaroğlu's surprise plan to visit Iran comes after the CHP leader, along with a delegation, had dinner with the Iranian ambassador to Turkey, Ali Rıza Bikdeli, at the JW Marriott Hotel on Wednesday. The dinner, held upon the invitation of Kılıçdaroğlu, reportedly became a platform to discuss the Syrian issue and recent developments in the Middle East.

CHP Hatay deputy Mehmet Ali Ediboğlu said Turkish-Iranian relations as well as cooperation on peace in the Middle East were the main topics of conversation for the dinner between Kılıçdaroğlu and Bikdeli.

Ediboğlu noted that in a discussion with the Iranian ambassador, Kılıcdaroğlu said the CHP was not upset by Turkish-Iranian trade -- aimed at getting around the Western embargo -- but expressed their uneasiness over the corruption and bribery case in which Iranian businessman Reza Zarrab is also involved.

Zarrab was one of the main suspects in last year's graft probe that shook the nation and alleged large scale corruption involving former prime minister and current President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan high-ranking businessmen and political figures close to his inner circle.

The political process following the Dec. 17-25, 2013 graft probes was discussed during the dinner. According to Edipoğlu, Zarrab was also a topic of conversation. However, the Iranian ambassador avoided commenting on the issue, “despite the fact that he knows and has followed the entire process very closely,” said Edipoğlu.

Edipoğlu later noted that Iran knows that any cooperation with the AK Party is impossible. “Iran believes that there is no chance of establishing any sort of cooperation with the AK Party in the Islamic-Mideast geography.”

At the dinner, Bikdeli invited Kılıçdaroğlu to Iran, but the two decided to hold their next meeting at the Iranian Embassy in Ankara. The date of Kılıçdaroğlu's visit is not yet definite, though he is expected travel to Iran with a delegation from his party.
