Church-Organized Rally In Armenia Calls For Pashinyan's Resignation

10.05.2024 06:42

Prime minister’s administration did not respond to Archbishop's demand.

A rally organized Thursday in the Armenian capital Yerevan by the Armenian Church calling for a halt to border delineation initiatives between Azerbaijan and Armenia also saw demands for Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's resignation.

Participants of the "Tavush for the Homeland" march organized by the religious representative of the Tavush region, Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, gathered in Republic Square for a rally joined by attendees from Yerevan, according to a report from Armenia's official news agency Armenpress.

In his address at the event, Galstanyan called for Pashinyan's resignation, issuing a one-hour ultimatum.

The Pashinyan administration did not respond to his demand.

Demonstrators at the rally chanted slogans demanding the resignation of Pashinyan, whom they accused of conceding territory while conducting border delineation efforts with Azerbaijan.

During the rally, an unidentified person drove a truck into the crowd of demonstrators. The driver, whose identity remained unknown, drove the truck for a while before eventually stopping amid the reactions of those present in the square.

Police present at the scene then apprehended the individual.

While the Armenian Investigative Committee initiated a probe into the incident, no information regarding casualties or fatalities was reported.

Galstanyan announced that he would spend the night at the square with the protesters.

Citizens and politicians organized marches from Tavush on May 4 and Gyumri in the Shirak region on May 8, heading to the capital.

Galstanyan invited all Armenians, including march participants, to join yesterday's anti-Pashinyan rally. -
