A Sakarya administrative court ruled on Thursday to reinstate former Sakarya Police Chief Mustafa Aktaş to his previous position.

Aktaş had been serving in Sakarya for two years when he was transferred to Ankara, on Jan. 9, 2014, as part of a wave of suspensions and reassignments that took place after a corruption probe into the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government came to light on Dec. 17, 2013.

Aktaş appealed to the administrative court for reinstatement when he was transferred to Ankara According to the court's decision, the Interior Ministry must reinstate Aktaş as chief of police within 15 days. While leaving Sakarya, Aktaş, who was known for his role in the Ergenekon coup investigation, told his colleagues that he was comfortable with the work he did during his two years with the Sakarya police department.

Nearly 15,000 police officers from across the country have been reassigned since December of last year in an extensive purge of the police force. The reassignments came after the corruption investigation implicated four ministers, state bureaucrats and several prominent businessmen close to the AK Party. The government has replaced the prosecutors who initiated the probe as well as other public prosecutors and dozens of officials at various state institutions.
