Davutoglu Says Farewell To Turkish Foreign Ministry

28.08.2014 15:33

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said goodbye to staff as he waits to become prime minister.

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said farewell to his ministry staff as he prepares to take over as prime minister.

Davutoglu, who has served as foreign minister since 2009, was elected chairman of the ruling Justice and Development Party on Wednesday.

In a farewell speech on Thursday, Davutoglu said it had been an honor and a heavy responsibility during a time of many changes.

He said: "There are at least seven or eight troubled countries in Turkey's region. In order to become one of the top ten biggest economies in the world, Turkey needs to provide peace and stability around the region."

Davutoglu highlighted Turkey's representation overseas and the increased number of employees as signs of Turkey's growing influence abroad.

Over the last 12 years, the number of diplomatic missions has risen from 163 to 221.

Referring to the consulate staff and their families still being held by militants in Iraq, he said: "I wish our brothers in Mosul could accompany us today. We hope to see them with our family soon."

Davutoglu thanked to all staff of foreign ministry for their efforts during his period.
