Deputy PM Arınç Says He Thought New Complex Would Be Used By Davutoğlu

23.10.2014 18:27

Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç said on Thursday he thought a newly built complex at the Atatürk Forestry Farm (AOÇ) would be used by Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu but that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan prefers to use it instead. The construction of the complex is to be finished soon. It was first.

It was first planned for use by the prime minister; however, President Erdoğan announced on Sept. 2 that he would be using the building, which is commonly referred to as "Ak Saray." The moniker is a reference to the name of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party). Literally, it means "White Palace."

Commenting on the issue during a TV show on Thursday, Arınç said: “Actually, there were some new buildings constructed for the Prime Minister's Office. I also thought that the Prime Ministry and other service buildings would be moved there [the new large complex]. However, our new president [Erdoğan] said, ‘I want to move to there.' He spoke with our Prime Ministry, and they agreed.”

Arınç also responded to some criticism directed at the government for its plans to hold the Oct. 29 Republic Day reception in the new complex instead of the historic Çankaya presidential palace, which holds significance as a symbol of the Turkish Republic.

The reception has been held every year at Çankaya since the foundation of the republic in 1923, but it will not take place there this year. Invitations for the event at the new complex were already sent to guests last week.

Opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli criticized the fact that the event will be held at the new complex, saying it was an "insult to the republic.”

Arınç said no place is divine. “If he [Erdoğan] said he wants to work there [the new complex], it is not right to associate this with [the republic's founder, Mustafa Kemal] Atatürk, or secularism,” he said.
