Destruction Of Private Arms Cache Causes Uproar İn Afghanistan

01.07.2015 23:48

Afghanistan’s lower house of the parliament (Wolesi Jigra) on Wednesday called for detailed investigation into NATO’s raid on a former Jihadi commander’s property that was allegedly used as private arms compound.

Afghan parliamentarians on Wednesday called for an investigation into a NATO raid on a compound belonging to a close ally of senior government figures.

Monday's ground and air attack on the compound of former mujahideen commander Jan Ahmad - a member of the Jamiat-e-Islami party and an ally of Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, who came second in last year's presidential election - reportedly destroyed a large arms cache.

On Wednesday, the Wolesi Jigra lower house of parliament called for an inquiry into the raid on the property in Parwan province.

House Speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi called on interior and defense ministry officials to visit the site and brief lawmakers.

The compound reportedly contained small and medium automatic weapons, explosive devices and ammunition.

Many former warlords in Afghanistan are believed to retain arms accumulated during the civil war in the 1990s but this is the first time such a figure has been targeted.

Abdullah, as well as other figures in Jamiat-e-Islami, such as Foreign Minister Salahudin Rabbani, Balkh province governor Atta Mohammad Noor and former intelligence chief Amarullah Saleh, have condemned the raid as a "disgrace to the jihadi leaders".

The government has made no public comment although the Ministry of Interior said it was not informed about the raid and an investigation is underway.

Ordinary Afghans have welcomed the move and have called for all private weapons cache's to be dismantled. - Kabil
