DİSK Head Slams Omnibus Law For Ignoring Workers' Rights

16.09.2014 17:20

Confederation of Revolutionary Workers' Unions (DİSK) chairman Kani Beko criticized newly-passed omnibus bill on Tuesday for not handling serious problems faced by hundreds of thousands of workers in the country. Holding a press conference at DİSK central office in İstanbul, Beko said the omnibus law only serves for some circles who get unearned income by laundering money and despoiling pasture areas in the country. Beko said the law grants partial rights to mine workers but nothing was done to end privatization and subcontractor system, which undermines legal and social security rights of many workers.“AKP government and Social Security Minister Faruk Çelik have said many times that subcontractor has been turned into a system of exploitation. However, the AKP government still persists on the system they confessed as exploitation,” stated Beko.

Beko said the law grants partial rights to mine workers but nothing was done to end privatization and subcontractor system, which undermines legal and social security rights of many workers.

“AKP government and Social Security Minister Faruk Çelik have said many times that subcontractor has been turned into a system of exploitation. However, the AKP government still persists on the system they confessed as exploitation,” stated Beko.

The AK Party government started drafting an omnibus law -- a law that includes changes to many others -- as a way to ameliorate the suffering of families of victims of a mining disaster on May 13 in Soma, a district of Manisa, where 301 workers trapped inside a mine after a fire broke out died. However, many other and highly irrelevant legislative changes have been integrated into the omnibus law, causing critics of the government to accuse it of exploiting the Soma accident as an opportunity to promote its own agenda. The government has increasingly relied on omnibus laws -- called tote-bag laws in Turkish -- to make amendments to major regulations and laws with little or no discussion on the changes.
