Novak Djokovic won his fifth Australian Open and eighth Grand Slam title after an enthralling four-set final in Melbourne against Andy Murray on Sunday.

After a fortnight of tennis in Melbourne, the Australian Open is over for another year. On Sunday, two finals were left to be decided with the mixed doubles and Novak Djokovic against Andy Murray in the men's final.

Djokovic too hot to handle

After a steady start to the match, Djokovic was first to get ahead, breaking Murray's serve in the eighth game of the first set. The Scot responded immediately to break the Djokovic serve, whilst winning the point off of a fantastic rally in the next game.

At 6-6, the set went to a tie-break and after two unforced errors from Murray, Djokovic won it 7-5 to seal the first set 7-6 in 72 minutes.

Murray - who had never beaten Djokovic having lost the first set - went 2-0 up to start the second set only for Djokovic to turn it around, with both players struggling on their own serve, breaking twice to go 3-2 up.

The sixth seed hadn't given up though and broke to bring the match level at 4-4, before going 5-4 ahead. The two played out an enthralling tenth game, with Djokovic holding out to making it 5-5 having let Murray back from 40-0.

Murray beat off three break points to make it 6-5, before another tie-break decided the set and the Scot level squared the match at one set all.

Just two sets had been completed in 152 minutes and the trend stayed the same in the third set. Murray breaking Djokovic going 2-0 ahead, before the Serbian brought us back to 2-2 with his own break.

The number one seed then showed his class, breaking Murray - who double-faulted for the second time in the match - again to make it 5-3. He then served and won the third set in comfortable fashion, with Murray shouting in frustration.

Murray then capitulated, to the frustration of the crowd in Melbourne.

Djokovic cruised to clinch his fifth Australian Open title by breaking the Scot three times and winning the fourth set 6-0, to end with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-0 victory in just under four hours.

Djokovic is now the second player to win five Australian Open men's titles and holds his place as the number one ranked player in the world. He's still yet to be beaten in an Australian Open Final.

"I have a different mind-set now that I'm a father, but this one is so special to me," Djokovic told Rod Laver Court at the trophy presentation.

Earlier in the day, Martina Hingis - who is still just 34 - won her first Grand Slam title since 2006, as she and mixed doubles partner Leander Paes beat Kristina Mladenovic and Daniel Nestor 6-4, 6-4.
