Dozens Detained At Banned Gaza Demonstration İn Paris

27.07.2014 13:03

French police detain 41 people at the end of pro Gaza protest.

French police have detained 41 people and questioned 65 others after violence broke out at the end of a banned pro-Gaza demonstration in Paris.

About 5,000 people rallied on Saturday despite the ban to support Gaza and protest against Israel's three-week onslaught on the long-besieged enclave.

At the end of the rally, some demonstrators threw rocks and empty bottles at police while anti-riot officers tried to disperse groups by using teargas.

Local shops were also attacked and 12 police officers were wounded during the violence, the Paris Governorship announced.

French authorities banned demonstration in support of Gazan people after earlier protests turned violent and caused financial damage to local shops.

A legal challenge against the ban was defeated when a Paris court upheld it.

The Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve has warned demonstrators that they could face trial if they attempt to breach the legal curb.

Israel pounded the Gaza Strip with fierce aerial bombardments since July 7, before launching a ground invasion dubbed "Operation Protective Edge" with the ostensible aim of halting rocket fire.

At least 1,053 Palestinians have been killed – mostly civilians – and around 6,000 others injured in Israel's offensive.
