The Congolese army and United Nations (U.N.) mission are planning to "liquidate" Ugandan rebels, a UN commander has said.

The Congolese army and United Nations (U.N.) mission are planning to "liquidate" Ugandan rebels, a UN commander has said.

"The armed forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the UN mission have decided to liquidate rebels of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF-NALU) for good," General Abdallah Kimweri, who heads the intervention brigade of the U.N. mission in Congo, told The Anadolu Agency Wednesday.

The Congolese army and U.N. troops have launched an operation, called Sokola1, against Ugandan rebels in a forest in the vicinity of the villages of Beni, a town of the North Kivu region.

General Muhindo Akili, who commands the operation, said it aimed to finish off the Ugandan rebels in the villages of Abialose, Makebi, Nadwi and Chuchubo2.

Akili told a radio run by the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission that the Congolese army would crack down on the Ugandan rebels wherever they were to eliminate them for good.

ADF-NALU militants are accused of committing major crimes in Beni and its suburbs. The rebels stepped up their attacks in eastern Congo over the past two months, leaving at least 250 civilians dead.

On November 20, rebels – wearing army fatigues – attacked Beni, which is close to Congo's border with Uganda and nearby villages.

The ADF-NALU is known for its relationship with Somalia's Al-Shabaab militant group, which has been fighting for control with the government of Mogadishu for several years now.

Formed in the 1990s to fight against the regime of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, the ADF-NALU – which includes Congolese elements – adopts a radical interpretation of the Islamic religion.

It was classified as a terrorist organization by the UN Security Council last June.
