Drc Body Drops Census Requirement From Election Law

25.01.2015 23:03

The Congolese National Assembly (lower house of parliament) has cancelled out an article in the new election law that linked the 2016 presidential election to conducting a new population census in Congo, a senior official said Sunday.

The Congolese National Assembly (lower house of parliament) has cancelled out an article in the new election law that linked the 2016 presidential election to conducting a new population census in Congo, a senior official said Sunday.

National Assembly Speaker Aubin Minaku added that 333 out of a total of 343 lawmakers voted for dropping the article.

He added that two lawmakers voted for keeping the article intact, while eight other lawmakers abstained from voting.

On Friday, the members of the assembly approved the law that made it necessary for the Democratic Republic of Congo to conduct a new population census before holding the presidential election, which is slated for 2016.

The Congolese opposition says a new population census would need years to be completed.

The law had sparked violent opposition protests in different areas in the African country.

At least 40 people were killed in these protests, according to the International Federation for Human Rights.

The government says, however, only 11 people were killed in these protests.
