Egyptian security forces on Friday arrested 35 supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi during the dispersal of several pro-Morsi protests held in different parts of the country, the Interior Ministry has said.
Morsi supporters staged rallies on Friday in different parts of Egypt to protest perceived government failure to solve the country's chronic problems, including frequent power outages.
In a statement, the Interior Ministry said it had arrested 35 "rioters" in the Qalioubiya, Assiut and Minya provinces.
Eyewitnesses said security forces had used teargas, live ammunition and birdshot to disperse pro-Morsi demonstrators.
A source from the National Alliance for the Defense of Legitimacy, Morsi's main support bloc, told Anadolu Agency that an Egyptian woman had been killed when security forces violently dispersed a rally in eastern Cairo.
However, ministry spokesman Hani Abdel-Latif denied that security forces had used teargas or live ammunition to break up demonstrations.
Morsi, a leader of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood group who won the country's first free presidential election in 2012, was ousted by the military in July of last year following protests against his single year in office.
Former army chief Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, widely seen as the architect of Morsi's ouster and subsequent imprisonment last year, was declared winner of a presidential poll conducted in May.
Morsi supporters continue to stage near-daily protests against the elected leader's removal amid an ongoing crackdown on dissent waged by Egypt's military-backed authorities.
