An Egyptian diplomat said Monday that there was unease in his country due to what he described as reluctance on the part of the U.S. to support Egypt in its ongoing war on "terrorism."
Mohamed Farid Munib, assistant foreign minister for the affairs of the Americas, said Egypt was keen to bolster its strategic relations with the U.S.
At a meeting with a group of U.S. congressmen, he said the failure of the U.S. government to support Egypt in its fight against "terrorism" would send a negative message that would ultimately encourage terrorist groups.
"This will harm the region's security and stability," Munib was "ed as saying in a Foreign Ministry statement.
He added that the international community had to treat all terrorist groups on an equal footing, noting that all these groups represented the same thing.
For months, Egypt has been cracking down on militant groups in the Sinai Peninsula, which shares borders with both Israel and the Gaza Strip.
Cairo says that the U.S. has failed to provide the military equipment needed for the campaign.
