A Cairo criminal court on Monday slapped an Islamist politician with a one-year jail term for assaulting a policeman, a judicial source has said.
The court jailed Essam Sultan, deputy leader of the moderate Al-Wasat Party, for one year for "verbally and physically assaulting a policeman during a trial session," the source told The Anadolu Agency.
The court verdict is subject to appeal.
Sultan is currently serving out a one-year jail sentence for "offending" Egypt's judiciary.
Sultan, a supporter of ousted President Mohamed Morsi, is standing trial on violence-related charges, which he insists are politically-driven.
