Egypt Earmarks $1.3Bn For Sinai Upgrade, Terror Fighting

01.02.2015 15:18

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al Sisi said Sunday that his government has allocated 10 billion Egyptian pounds (roughly $1.3 billion) for development efforts and terror combat in Sinai Peninsula, days after deadly attacks on police and army sites in the restive region.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi said Sunday that his government has allocated 10 billion Egyptian pounds (roughly $1.3 billion) for development efforts and terror-combat in Sinai Peninsula, days after deadly attacks on police and army sites in the restive region.

The Armed Forces would "construct and build [Sinai] and fight terror," al-Sisi, a former army general, told public figures and top army and police brass in Cairo.

The announcement came three days after multiple attacks, claimed by a militant group that targeted military and security sites in North Sinai, leaving scores dead and injured, according to unofficial reports.

Al-Sisi, meanwhile, said he has ordered the Interior Ministry, which controls the country's police forces, not to "violate" the rights of Egyptians, apparently in response to criticism of heavy-handed police tactics against dissident in the country.

"Egyptian police must preserve the Egyptians' rights," he said.

"Although we are on high security alert, the rights of our people must be respected," he added. "I will not accept any violation."

On Thursday night, militants carried out a spate of attacks on security facilities and personnel in the northern Sinai Peninsula, leaving scores dead and injured.

The attacks were claimed by the "Welayat Sinai" militant group, formerly known as Ansar Beit al-Maqdis.

Active in northern Sinai, the group acquired its current name after reportedly swearing allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) militant movement.

The attacks were the latest in a string of assaults targeting army and police in Sinai – which shares borders with both Israel and the Gaza Strip – since the ouster of elected President Mohamed Morsi in mid-2013.
