Egypt's Brotherhood Condemns Sinai Attacks

30.01.2015 15:04

Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood group has condemned a series of simultaneous attacks on military and police sites in North Sinai on Thursday.

Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood group has condemned a series of simultaneous attacks on military and police sites in North Sinai on Thursday.

"Our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased soldiers in Sinai and the Egyptian people," the group said on Twitter Friday.

"We unequivocally condemn all acts of violence."

For his part, leading Brotherhood member Abdel-Mawgood al-Derdi held President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi responsible for the attacks, which left at least 26 troops dead according to security sources.

The attacks are the latest in a string of assaults targeting army and police personnel in Sinai – which shares borders with both Israel and the Gaza Strip – since the ouster of elected President Mohamed Morsi, who hails from the Brotherhood, in mid-2013.

The "Welayet Sinai" militant group (formerly known as Ansar Beit al-Maqdis) has claimed responsibility for Thursday attacks.

The group acquired its current name after reportedly swearing allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL), a militant group that captured vast territories in both Iraq and Syria last year.
