Egypt's Criticism Of Erdoğan Unacceptable, Says Ankara

01.10.2014 22:27

Turkey has lambasted the Egyptian government for its criticism of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's remarks during a meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) on Sunday. “We have observed that the administration in Egypt, instead of taking into account sincere calls, voices unacceptable allegations against Turkey,” said the Turkish Foreign Ministry in a written statement late on Tuesday. The ministry statement came after the Egyptian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Sept. 29 in which it accused Turkey of interfering in Egypt's domestic affairs. Erdoğan on Sunday accused the United Nations and other international organizations and countries of supporting an "unjust situation" in Egypt. He said they have failed to recognize that the country's first freely elected president, Mohammed Morsi, was toppled in a military coup and that mass killings resulted in 5,000 dead. “How is it possible to give a platform to a person who is behind mass killings in his country?” asked Erdoğan, refer

“How is it possible to give a platform to a person who is behind mass killings in his country?” asked Erdoğan, referring to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. The former military chief of Egypt came to power after a coup that was followed by an election, which Turkey has not recognized as legitimate.

“Our sincere calls addressing the Egyptian people's legitimate demands for democracy, equality, freedom and prosperity will continue unless tangible progress is achieved. Turkey will not refrain from remaining actively involved in matters such as ending human rights violations in Egypt and respect for the free will of our brothers in Egypt,” the statement added.

Erdoğan attended the UN General Assembly last week and refused to sit at the same table as el-Sisi at a luncheon hosted by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. He also criticized the UN for allowing el-Sisi to address the UN General Assembly last week.
