The speaker of the Egyptian parliament-in-exile on Friday urged a campaign of civil disobedience, calling on parents to prevent their children from joining the country's security forces.
Gamal Heshmat, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, spoke out two days after Egyptian police killed 13 leading members of the group in Cairo.
"The Egyptian people should not allow their children to serve in the army or police force," Heshmat told Anadolu Agency.
In an interview in Istanbul, where the parliament-in-exile has been based since December, Heshmat spoke about the death of Egyptian prosecutor Hisham Barakat in a car bombing on Monday.
"There are many suspicions and questions to be found in the assassination of... Hisham Barakat," he said.
"Pedestrians are always searched by electronic devices at security checkpoints all over Cairo. Despite all the security arrangements, a vehicle laden with half-a-ton of explosives was able to enter the streets and easily pass… strict security."
There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack, which came on the eve of the second anniversary of protests that ended in former President Mohamed Morsi being ousted in a military coup. - İstanbul
