Egypt's Sisi Concludes Brief Visit To Saudi Arabia

01.03.2015 17:04

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al Sisi on Sunday departed from Saudi capital Riyadh after a short visit, his first since the inauguration of King Salman bin Abdulaziz late January.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi on Sunday departed from Saudi capital Riyadh after a short visit, his first since the inauguration of King Salman bin Abdulaziz late January.

During the brief visit, al-Sisi held a closed summit with the Saudi monarch, followed by a meeting with senior representatives from both countries, according to the Egyptian presidency.

Joint talks have tackled the crises in Yemen, Libya and Syria, the Egyptian presidency said.

"The President expressed support for the Gulf initiative [on Yemen] and reiterated the importance of protecting the security of the Red Sea," presidential spokesman Alaa Youssef said of the 2012 Gulf-sponsored settlement by which ABD Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, whose presidency has been challenged by the Shiite Houthi group, was installed.

Youssef also said that al-Sisi stressed that "counterterrorism efforts" in Libya do not contradict with Egypt's support for UN-sponsored peace talks between Libyan warring camps.

He went on to say that Egypt seeks to "preserve the Syrian state institutions from collapse" and that it supports a political solution in the war-ravaged Arab country.

Last month, Egyptian military forces launched airstrikes against sites suspected of belonging to Daesh militant group in eastern Libya's city of Darnah.

The strikes came after Daesh, the Arabic acronym for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, released a video purportedly showing the execution of 21 Egyptian hostages in Libya.

Earlier on Sunday, al-Sisi arrived in Riyadh on his first official visit to the oil-rich monarchy since King Salman ascended the throne in late January.

Saudi Arabia was among the first Arab countries that welcomed the ouster of elected President Mohamed Morsi by the military, then led by Sisi, in mid-2013.

The oil-rich kingdom has since channeled billions of dollars in assistance to Egypt.
