Egypt Says 7 'Terrorists' Killed İn Suez

14.09.2014 18:33

The militants were reportedly responsible for recent deadly attacks on police and army troops.

Egypt declared on Sunday the killing of seven "terrorists" involved in three major attacks that had left 33 army and police forces killed during the past three months.

"Police and army forces had raided the strongholds of leaders of the militant Ansar Beit al-Maqdis group in a mountainous area in Suez," Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim told a televised press conference.

"An intense exchange of fire with the terrorists led to the death of all seven of them," he added.

The minister said that heavy arms, grenades and explosive belts were found.

He added that the slain militants were among the most dangerous in Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, which claimed responsibility for most attacks against police and army forces in recent months.

Ibrahim said the militants were responsible for an attack on a border guard patrol vehicle in southwestern Egypt that had left an army officer and five soldiers dead.

He added that the same group carried out another attack in the same area, killing 21 army troops, and a third attack on a police vehicle in northwestern Egypt, killing an officer and five police conscripts.

Policemen and army personnel have been the target of repeated attacks in recent months.
