Egypt Slams Critical Remarks By Un Rights Commissioner

29.01.2015 21:03

Egypt's Foreign Ministry on Thursday criticized as "incomprehensive" a statement by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on the death of more than 20 people in protests marking the 4th anniversary of the Jan. 25 revolution, which ousted autocratic President Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

"The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights had overlooked the planting on a daily basis of scores of bombs and explosive devices [by the terrorist Muslim Brotherhood group]," the ministry said in a statement.

On Tuesday, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein said he was deeply disturbed by the death of at least 20 people during clashes between security forces and protesters in Egypt since Friday.

"I have in the past urged Egyptian authorities to take urgent measures to ensure that any excessive use of force by security personnel is promptly investigated, alleged perpetrators are put on trial and victims have access to justice and compensation," Al Hussein said in a statement.

He added that he strongly supported Egypt's National Independent Fact Finding Commission's recommendation to the General Prosecutor to publicly release the results of all investigations.

The Foreign Ministry denounced, however, the commissioner's accusation to Egyptian security personnel that they had used "excessive force", saying that security forces faced violations by "terrorist elements", who use firearms on a daily basis.

At least 23 people were killed in protests that marked the 4th anniversary of the Jan. 25 revolution in recent days.

While Egyptian authorities accuse the Muslim Brotherhood, the group from which ousted President Mohamed Morsi hails, of condoning violence, the group says it is committed to peaceful activism.

Egyptian authorities have launched a fierce crackdown on supporters of Morsi and his embattled Muslim Brotherhood group, detaining thousands and killing hundreds.
