Egypt Student Killed During Anti-Regime Protest: Sources

30.01.2015 19:49

A protester was killed on Friday during an anti regime demonstration held in the village of Al Ouda in Egypt's northern Sharqiya province, the home town of ousted President Mohamed Morsi, according to eyewitnesses.

A protester was killed on Friday during an anti-regime demonstration held in the village of Al-Ouda in Egypt's northern Sharqiya province, the home town of ousted President Mohamed Morsi, according to eyewitnesses.

A student succumbed to his wounds after being shot when police dispersed a protest held in Al-Ouda, eyewitnesses told The Anadolu Agency.

Students against the Coup, an opposition movement, said on Facebook that "Hisham Abdel-Hamid, a freshman at Al-Azhar University, was shot dead in Sharqiya's Al-Ouda village."

Sources at Sharqiya's security directorate told AA that "no deaths were reported," asserting that police had "only dispersed protesters after they blocked a public road."

Anti-regime demonstrations broke out in several Egyptian provinces on Friday in response to calls by Morsi's main support bloc.

Egypt's first freely elected president, Morsi was ousted by the military in mid-2013 – and subsequently arrested – following mass demonstrations against his single year in office.

His supporters describe his removal as a military coup while his detractors call it a "popular military-backed uprising."
