Eight children, aged from 18 months to 15 years old, were found stabbed to death on Friday in an Australian home. Eight children, aged from 18 months to 15 years old, were found stabbed to death on Friday in an Australian home.
A police spokesman said all were found in a suburban home in the Queensland city of Cairns in northern Australia.
A woman, 34, found in the yard of the house, was also suffering stab wounds. She was taken to a hospital where the police spokesman said she was assisting them with their inquiries.
Uniformed police and detectives swarmed the area when the bodies were discovered at 11.20 a.m. local time.
In a press conference near the scene of the incident, Far North Queensland crime coordinator detective inspector Bruno Asnicar said the scene was in lock down while forensic officers examined evidence to determine what occurred at the residence.
Lisa Thaiday, who claimed to be the cousin of the 34-year-old injured woman, told Australian Associated Press that the children were all siblings and the injured woman was their mother.
She claimed another sibling, a 20-year-old man, arrived home to
find his brothers and sisters dead inside the house.
She described the family and extended relatives as close-knit. "We're a big family and most of us are from the (Torres) Strait," she said. "I just can't believe it. We just found out (about) those poor babies."
Torres Strait Islanders come from the waterway between Australia and Papua New Guinea.
Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott issued a statement on the tragedy in Cairns, saying it was "heartbreaking".
"All parents would feel a gut-wrenching sadness at what has happened. This is an unspeakable crime," he said.
"These are trying days for our country. Tonight, there will be tears and prayers across our country for these children."
"My thoughts are with the Queensland Police and all who have to respond to this terrible situation."
Queensland Premier Campbell Newman also issued a statement, saying he was deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic events in Cairns.
"My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of those concerned," he said.
"I'm also aware of the impact this will have on the emergency service workers and police officers who responded to the scene, and I have asked the Acting Ministers to make sure those individuals are receiving the support they need."
"Indeed, the whole Cairns community and the people of Queensland will feel the effects of this tragedy, particularly at a time of a year when families come together." (Cihan/Xinhua)
