After 13 opposition deputies called on Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Taner Yıldız to resign during Parliament's Planning and Budget Commission discussions on Thursday, the minister has said he will not rule out such a possibility and that he will discuss his possible resignation with the prime minister.

Mining accidents in Turkey have been on the public agenda since 301 miners were killed in the Soma coal mining disaster in May. Only two of the 18 trapped miners in Ermenek have been recovered since the incident occurred on Oct. 28.

Responding to the opposition's call on Thursday evening, Minister Yıldız said: “Don't think that I do not consider resigning. I am a person who has lived by his principles. I offered to submit my [resignation] to the Cabinet after the Soma accident. I will share the suggestion of the 13 deputies with the prime minister once again. Those who know me also know that the easiest way out would be through resigning."

PM Davutoğlu backs Yıldız

Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu commented on the opposition deputies' call for Yıldız's resignation during his statement on Friday, saying that it is not the business of the opposition to evaluate the performance of the ministers or to determine if they should resign.

“As the current prime minister and as a previous Cabinet colleague of [Yıldız], I am someone who knows very well just how the esteemed Taner Yıldız performed during his term as energy minister,” Davutoğlu said, adding that the developments Yıldız has brought to Turkey's energy sector over the past years should not be forgotten.

Davutoğlu said he went to Ermenek to personally determine who was and was not negligent in the incident, adding that he “also received briefings in Ankara regarding the issue. Beyond this, we [the government] have already announced a reform package on job safety.”

In a speech directed at Yıldız during Parliament's Planning and Budget Commission discussions on Thursday, Bülent Kuşoğlu, Ankara deputy for the Republican People's Party (CHP), said: “You need to resign. I haven't said this to any minister, [but] you are the chief politician responsible for the mining disaster in Soma that took 301 lives. You are also the chief politician responsible for the greed for excessive profit.”
