Hundreds marched with the Global Action Group (KEG) against climate change and nuclear weapons along İstiklal Avenue in İstanbul ahead of the 2014 United Nations Climate Summit.

Environmentalists marched from Tünel Square to Galatasaray High School on İstiklal Avenue, a common route for protests in the city. The packed march drew much attention from the public, nearly halting pedestrian traffic on the avenue.

Bicyclists were at the front of the march, promoting this environmentally friendly form of transportation. They were followed by drummers, adding a festive spirit to the march, as other activists followed them, chanting “Change the system, not the climate!” and “This is only the beginning, continue the fight!” They also held up banners saying “Our patience is being flooded by global warming!” Polar bears were one mascot of the march, being pictured on banners and rainbow flags to represent the detrimental consequences of climate change for animals.

The Climate Summit Opposition Group made a statement, saying: “We are marching for justice against climate change. We, as a part of this international movement, oppose the exploitation of man and nature. We are marching against the use of climate-altering fossil fuels, the destruction of the ecosystem, nuclear energy, hydroelectric power plant projects, urban renewal and other mega-projects.”

During the protest, teams of riot police stood by with water cannons and tear gas guns, but they did not intervene in the march.

The march, organized by the Climate Summit Opposition Group, protested against the 2014 UN Climate Summit, which will host world leaders. The protest in İstanbul is one of 2,808 solidarity events in 166 countries, making for the largest climate march in history according to peoplesclimate.org. The İstanbul march was part of a two-day program in İstanbul that included panel discussions, films and concerts from Sept. 20-21 at Tütün Deposu in the city's Tophane neighborhood.

The UN has confirmed that 122 heads of government will attend the world leaders' summit on climate issues in New York on Sept. 23, the largest such meeting ever organized. The event will be hosted by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. The summit will also be co-convened by The Climate Group and the CDP.

According to a press release from Selwin Hart, director of the secretary-general's Climate Change Support Team at the UN Headquarters, “Announcements at the Summit will be aimed at mobilizing finance for climate action, increasing the use of renewable energy, increasing energy efficiency, reducing deforestation, promoting climate smart agriculture, building resilience, reducing pollutants, and promoting climate action in the world's cities.” (Cihan/Today's Zaman)
