President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has filed a claim against Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli, seeking TL 100,000 in damages for allegedly libelous statements the MHP leader made about Erdoğan.

Lawyers Fatih Şahin, Muammer Cemaloğlu and Burhanettin Sevencan have filed a petition with prosecutors in which they accuse Bahçeli of libeling and humiliating Erdoğan in 10 rallies before Turkey's June 7 general election.

The petition stated that Bahçeli had gone beyond the limits of freedom of expression and that Erdoğan's personal rights had been violated. “The personal rights of our client were openly and gravely attacked. The speeches [by Bahçeli] on which the complaint is based were ill-intended and malicious,” according to the petition.

The lawyers have demanded that Bahçeli pay TL 100,000 in compensation to Erdoğan.

In recent months, more than 100 people have been charged with offenses and some then detained after being accused of insulting Erdoğan. The lawsuits are widely considered a new method of intimidating opposition figures who are critical of the government.
