EU Adopts Broad Economic Sanctions Against Russia

The EU has adopted stringent economic sanctions against key Russian industries. The curbs will affect the country's energy, defense and finance sectors, as well as some technology exports.European Union governments have agreed to impose broad economic sanctions against Russia intended to strongarm Moscow into reducing its role in the conflict in Ukraine, diplomats in Brussels said Tuesday.







The sanctions will target Russia's oil and defense industries and curb exports of dual-use goods and some technologies, diplomats told reporters.







Aimed at key Russian industries, the punitive action will also include curbs on Russian banks.







The new measures, which will be reviewed in three months, go beyond the asset freezes and visa bans imposed until now on confidants of Russian President Vladimir Putin.







The sanctions are designed to make Putin's support of pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine uneconomical.
