European Union Affairs Minister Volkan Bozkır has announced Turkey's new EU strategy, saying it aims to eliminate the obstacles on Turkey's path to full membership.

“Prioritizing Turkey's interests and the benefits for its citizens, the new strategy will lead to a boost in the reform process and establishment of new communication channels between Turkey and the EU,” read a written statement released on the EU Ministry's website on Thursday.

According to the statement, the strategy consists of three parts, including a “political reform process,” a “socio-economic transformation in the accession process” and an “EU communication strategy.”

“The strategy mainly aims at achieving EU standards in all areas through an accelerated reform process, determining the priority issues related with the negotiation chapters and implementing a strong communication framework that reveals the meaning and potential of Turkey-EU cooperation in constructing a European architecture in the midst of harsh regional and global challenges,” read a document about the strategy released on the ministry's website.

Turkey has been strongly criticized by the EU over the government's violation of the union's core values, including the rule of law, the separation of powers and freedom of speech.

The EU's latest country progress report on Turkey, which will be released in October, highlights government corruption and points to a reversal of the EU's Copenhagen criteria, according to a leaked first draft of the report.

According to the draft, the details of which were published by the Cumhuriyet daily on Sept. 1, the Justice and Development Party (AK Party), which claims to have established a “new Turkey,” has backpedaled from EU-inspired reforms and moved away from the Copenhagen criteria, which define the standards required for full EU membership.

The report also notes that no recent developments in the country have been positive in terms of EU criteria.
