Europe's border control agency Frontex will help Italy deal with the significant rise in the number of illegal immigrants reaching its territories, EU Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom said Wednesday.
The agency will operate under the name of "Frontex Plus" in Italy and will help the country deal with migrants crossing the Mediterranean by boats from North Africa, replacing the "Mare Nostrum" rescue mission.
Italian Interior Minister Angelino Alfano, who met with EU Commissioner Malmstrom, said that Italy was grateful for the support as the country "cannot cope with the migrants alone."
Malmstrom said: "The aim is to put in place an enlarged Frontex Plus to complement what Italy has been doing."
EU states will provide planes, ships and assets to protect Italian and European borders, according to Italian Minister Alfano.
Frontex Plus is to be launched in November and details of the new operation will be announced in the upcoming days.
