Gathering at a symposium on Saturday in İstanbul experts called for prohibition of tear gas usage in Turkey which may lead to causalities.

Dangerous effects of tear gas and scientific studies in that area were explained during the symposium titled “Tear gas should be banned” at Medicine Faculty of İstanbul University with the participation of prominent experts.

Turkish Medical Association (TTB) General Secretary Beyazıt İlhan delivered a speech during the program saying that tear gas has a number of dangerous effects on health such as complications on cardiovascular system, psychiatry, neurology and nausea. “There are lots of death cases in Turkey and abroad due to exposure to tear gas,” said İlhan.

Speaking following İlhan, Dr. Ali Çerkezoğlu pointed out that almost in every demonstration people are exposed to tear gas, which is unfortunately seen as a routine intervention by the police. “We saw tear gas was used during Gezi Park protests most. Hundreds of people are unfortunately exposed to tear gas in any democratic demonstrations, which bears social and politic results. However, its effect to the human health is the most important one,” added Çerkezoğlu.

During the almost one-month-long Gezi protests in May, 2013, which spread all across Turkey, more than 10,000 people were injured, with some losing an eye, due to the excessive use of tear gas, water cannon and plastic bullets, based on data from the Ankara-based Human Rights Association (İHD). According to the Taksim Solidarity Platform, in just the first 15 days of protests, the police had used 150,000 gas bombs.
