Army spokesman Kristomei Sianturi stated that 9 of the deceased were civilians and 4 were military personnel, and he reported that an investigation has been initiated regarding the incident. Kristomei noted that the area where the incident occurred is a site where such explosions are routinely carried out.

Sianturi mentioned that local people usually come to the area to collect scrap materials left after explosions, saying, "The area was evacuated to ensure safety against the possibility of another explosion."
Another army spokesman, Wahyu Yudhayana, said that the explosion occurred while the soldiers were completing the ammunition disposal process. Yudhayana expressed that the investigation would also cover how civilians were able to get so close to the explosion site.
