16.01.2015 18:37

The families of delinquent and victimized children whose names and addresses were deliberately exposed by the education directorate in a district of Diyarbakır province have started moving to other cities, as they have become increasingly uncomfortable knowing their personal information has become known to other people, including their neighbors. The education directorate in Diyarbakır's Bağlar district published a list containing personal information from the identity cards of 872 children, along with the names of their parents and their addresses, on its website for 24 hours. The information had been prepared by the police in Diyarbakır, which then shared it with the education directorate in Bağlar, which proceeded to post the list on its website.

Following this event, the Ministry of Education dismissed the head of the directorate, Hacı Ali Çelik, and launched an investigation on Wednesday.

The families of the children are preparing to file lawsuits against those involved, including the director of the Diyarbakır Police Department, Halis Böğürcü, and the head of the Diyarbakır Police Department's Children's Unit, Şenol Toklu. The families stressed that these officials should be suspended from their duties at the earliest time possible. The Diyarbakır Bar Association is also preparing to file lawsuits against those responsible in the case.

Referring to Article 20 of the Constitution, the families maintain that the principle of respecting one's private and family life has been violated.

Article 20 reads as follows: “Everyone has the right to demand that respect be shown for his or her family or private life. The secrecy of the family and private life cannot be violated.”

One of the families, wishing to remain anonymous, told Today's Zaman that the state had assaulted their children's dignity.

“The state has put us in a shameful situation. [The state] played with the pride of our children, and tarnished the honor of the families. The police's act of assaulting our children's dignity instead of safeguarding their rights should not go unpunished,” said the family.

The families contended that the list, in which their children were categorized as “raped” or “subjected to sexual abuse,” was uploaded to social media websites and became accessible to all Internet users.

The family said that it met together with other families to discuss how to cope with the situation. Maintaining that their children's future is at stake, some families said they sent their children to homes of their relatives living in other cities.

They all complain of the change in attitude of other people, such as their neighbors, toward them. Some of the families have opted to move to other cities to remove themselves from the situation.
