Fatah Member Denies Egypt Hamas Talks Remarks

20.09.2014 16:32

Al Ahmad said his movement is keen that Egypt would continue to sponsor Palestinian reconciliation talks.

A member of the Central Committee of the Palestinian faction Fatah on Saturday denied reports about previous statements that Cairo had refused to host dialogue talks between Fatah and the rival faction Hamas.

"Putting these words in my mouth sabotages the awaited meeting and puts hindrances on its road," Azzam al-Ahmad said in a statement.

"We wait for our brothers in Egypt to reply to our request to host Fatah-Hamas dialogue talks meetings," he added.

Egyptian media reports "ed sources as saying earlier that Egyptian authorities had turned down a Fatah request to host a Fatah-Hamas meeting to discuss the future of reconciliation between the two movements as well as negotiations with Israel.

Egypt. However, denied these reports.

In a statement on Saturday, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said these reports were both "groundless" and had nothing to do with the truth.

Al-Ahmad said his movement is keen that Egypt would continue to sponsor Palestinian reconciliation talks, regardless of the Arab country's position toward Hamas.

He said this Egyptian sponsorship severed the best interests of the Palestinian people and its "just cause."

Tensions have mounted recently between Hamas and Fatah, the latter of which is led by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

The tension comes in spite of a June reconciliation deal that produced a unity government headed by West Bank-based Prime Minister Rami al-Hamdullah.

The unity government has yet to assume political control of the Gaza Strip.

Both factions, meanwhile, continue to accuse each other of attempting to sabotage the reconciliation deal.

The deal ended seven years of division between the two factions, which had led to the establishment of two separate seats of government – Fatah in the West Bank and Hamas in Gaza – after the latter routed troops loyal to Abbas in 2007 and assumed control of the entire Gaza Strip.
