Turkish Bar Association (TBB) Chairman Metin Feyzioğlu wrote a letter to the Saudi interior minister on behalf of a Saudi Arabian lawyer who was sentenced to 15 years in prison for demanding that women receive more rights in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Waleed Abulkhair, a supporter of women's rights reforms, also asked that the country be transformed into a constitutional monarchy. In addition to his prison sentence, Abulkhair also received a 15-year travel ban once he is released and was ordered to pay a fine of $53,000, after a website he founded was deemed insulting to the monarchy and the main political institutions.
Feyzioğlu, who wrote on behalf of Abulkhair, directed the letter to Interior Minister Prince Muhammed Naif, expressing the TBB's concerns and calling the verdict “ruthless.” Feyzioğlu asked Prince Naif to allow Abulkhair's case to be resolved in accordance with international law.
Stating that lawyers should be allowed to practice their professions according to the United Nations' Havana Rules, Feyzioğlu wrote that the Saudi officials must also adhere to these rules and not hamper judicial workers from undertaking their professions.
