Filipino peacekeepers began fighting with Syrian rebels on Saturday, after negotiations on the standoff broke down, according to Philippine military.

The fighting broke out at 6 a.m. (Syrian time) when the rebels attacked Position 68, which was manned by estimated 40 Filipino peacekeepers, Philippine Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said.

"Those at Position 69 were able to extricate. Only those at Position 68 are under attack," Gazmin said.

Positions 68 and 69 were surrounded by the Syrian rebels on Thursday as the insurgents orders the Filipino peacekeepers to lay down their firearms.

But the Filipino soldiers refused to yield their arms and pledged to defend their camps, which resulted in a standoff.

This happened after the rebels occupied the camp of 43 Fiji peacekeepers when they surrender their firearms. (Cihan/Xinhua)
