The country's largest refugee camp with a capacity of 35,000 people was opened in the town of Suruç in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa, with first lady Emine Erdoğan marking the camp's inauguration ceremony.

Education Minister Nabi Avcı, Family and Social Policy Minister Ayşenur İslam, and the head of the Prime Ministry's Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD), Fuat Oktay, accompanied the first lady during the ceremony.

“Our doors are open to all oppressed people. You are our guests,” Erdoğan told a group of refugees.

The camp will host Syrian Kurds who fled their homes in Kobani after the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) besieged the town for nearly five months.

According to AFAD, the number of Syrians in Turkish refugee camps and cities reached 1.6 million in February.

According to official figures, approximately 200,000 people have died in Syria since the war began. Almost 5 million people have fled to neighboring countries and approximately 8 million have abandoned their homes and sought refuge within Syria.
