Two militants were killed and a foreign petroleum expert slightly injured on Thursday when militants attempted to kidnap the latter in Yemeni capital Sanaa, a security source said.
The source added that the foreign oil expert had been leaving a barber's shop in downtown Sanaa when two militants had tried to kidnap him.
The foreign oil expert then killed the two militants, the source said, adding that the expert had been either Russian or Indian.
There has not been any claim of responsibility for the foiled kidnapping bid.
The Yemeni government announced in late March that it had arrested members of a kidnapping ring that had been active Sanaa, which had sold abductees to other organizations, including Al-Qaeda.
Yemen has been dogged by turmoil since pro-democracy protests in 2011 forced autocratic president Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down after 33 years in power.
In the three years since, authorities have struggled to restore law and order to the restive southern Arabian country.
