Four Police Officers Arrested, Eight Released In Alleged Wiretapping Case

An İzmir court decided on Thursday to arrest four police officers and release eight who were detained on Tuesday allegedly in charge of wiretapping as part of a police operation against police force. An İzmir court decided on Thursday to arrest four police officers and release eight who were detained on Tuesday allegedly in charge of wiretapping as part of a police operation against police force.

On Tuesday, 32 police officers, who were tasked with in a tender-rigging investigation, were taken into custody by security forces on the grounds that they had been involved in illegal wiretappings.

Following a questioning at the İzmir Police Department, 12 of the officers were referred to the İzmir Court. At the end of the court lawyer Ali Aksoy told reporters that four police officers were arrested by the court while eight were released. Aksoy stated that the officers deny any accusations on illegal wiretapping which were carried out by following orders of prosecutors and judges.

In January, as many as 25 suspects, including prominent Turkish State Railways (TCDD) officials, were detained as part of a tender-rigging investigation launched by the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. Fourteen of them were later arrested. The suspects are facing charges of offering and accepting bribes, tender-rigging, corruption, misconduct, embezzlement and aggravated fraud.
