France: Pro-Palestine Protester Summoned To Court

29.07.2014 21:03

Up to 41 people were detained and 17 police officers were wounded during the forbidden protest in Paris on July 19.

Alain Pojolat, a member of the New Anticapitalist Party (NPA) and organizer of a forbidden pro-Palestine demonstration in Paris, has been summoned to court, according to local media.

"Pojolat is to appear in court on October 22," Hosni Maati, lawyer for the organizers said Tuesday.

Up to 41 people were detained and 17 police officers were wounded during the forbidden protest on July 19, when about 3,000 Parisians gathered in the French capital's Barbes neighborhood to protest against the ongoing Israeli aggression on Palestinians in Gaza Strip.

The crowd chanted slogans supporting Gaza and burned the Israeli flag despite a ban on the demonstration. Some protesters threw projectiles at the police prompting them to disperse the demonstrators with tear gas.

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve warned Saturday that demonstrators taking part in prohibited protests would be likely to face trial.
