Gaza Rockets Close İndustrial Facilities İn S. Israel

20.08.2014 17:19

Israel Radio said the continued closure of industrial facilities had collectively incurred some $6 million in daily losses for their owners.

More than 1750 industrial facilities in southern Israel have remained offline since Israel began its onslaught on the beleaguered Gaza Strip early last month, Israel Radio reported on Wednesday.

It said the continued closure of all these industrial facilities – as Palestinian resistance groups continue to fire rockets at Israel – had collectively incurred some $6 million in daily losses for their owners.

The broadcaster added that industrial facilities had remained closed during recent ceasefires between Palestinian factions and Israel for fear of potential rocket attacks.

According to Israel Radio, some 35,000 people employed by these facilities have had to remain home since Israel's military onslaught began almost six weeks ago.

The broadcaster added that some 5000 farmers worked on agricultural land in the same area.

Khaled al-Elmi, a researcher on Israeli affairs, said the situation would likely cost the Israeli government a considerable sum.

"[Israeli] Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised to compensate people [living and working] within 40km of the Gaza border," al-Elmi told Anadolu Agency, adding that most affected industrial facilities fell within this area.

He estimated these facilities' total losses at $500 million, including salaries of workers forced to stay home.

The same area contains some 25,000 economic facilities, according to Wednesday press reports, which noted that these facilities account for almost 5 percent of all economic facilities in the country.

Since Tuesday, Palestinian factions have fired more than 100 rockets at southern Israel.

Indirect ceasefire talks in Cairo between Palestinian and Israeli negotiators broke down on Tuesday, opening the door to renewed Israeli assaults on the Gaza Strip.

Since then, fresh Israeli attacks have killed 19 Gazans, bringing to 2036 the total number of Palestinians killed since Israel began its offensive on July 7.
