Some 9.8 million Greeks are expected to go to ballot boxes in the first round of local elections to choose their local leaders on Sunday.
The polling stations will be open from 7 a.m. local time (5 a.m. GMT) to 7 p.m. local time.
If a leading electoral list does not manage to get more than 50 percent of the votes, a runoff between the highest-polled two lists will be held on May 25.
The day of the run-offs coincide with the European Parliament elections.
A legislation adopted in 2010 removed governorships and divided the country into thirteen regions, decreasing the number of mayorships from 1,034 to 325.
