The Embassy of Greece in Ankara has announced that a technical error at the Greek Consulate in İstanbul preventing Turkish citizens from being granted visas has been solved.

In a written statement on Wednesday, the Greek ambassador to Turkey, Kyriakos Loukakis, refuted reports in Turkish media that the visas were not being issued due to the economic crisis in Greece.

Loukakis explained that the visas were not granted for three days due to a technical problem at the Consulate General of Greece in İstanbul.

“I would like to take this opportunity to reaffirm that Turkish citizens are more than welcome in Greece, and that we are making every effort to facilitate their entry into our country in a spirit of hospitality and good neighborliness, reflecting the friendly relations between our two peoples,” Loukakis said in the statement.

In 2014, some 750,000 Turkish citizens visited Greece, and this number is expected to rise to 1 million this year, according to the Hürriyet daily.

Every year, approximately 20 million tourists visit Greece and contribute $15 billion in revenue to the country, where 9.4 percent of all employees work in the tourism industry.
