Greek Minister Unhappy At 'Rigged' Privatization

29.03.2017 16:28

"A rigged game" characterized the tender process for the privatization of part of Greece's electricity network, the country's interior minister claimed on Wednesday.

Panos Skourletis told local broadcaster SKAI TV the multi-million-euro sale of a production unit of the Public Power Corporation (PPC) should not be carried out under pressure.

In a tense climate over the leftist SYRIZA government's PPC sale, Skourletis accused Greece's international creditors of not sticking to deal conditions which had been agreed beforehand.

Stating he had been "brought up to respect democratic dialogue and collective decisions" he said he did disagree with the sale of assets but said prices would be affected by external pressures on Greece.

He further claimed certain interests in the country and abroad were seeking to change Greece's government.

Labor unions active in the PPC have already threatened mass demonstrations and strikes, which could affect electricity supplies all over the country.

Energy-sector reforms are one of the main sticking points between Athens and creditors ahead of a delayed second review of Greece's financial bailout.

Since last week, Greek ministers have been negotiating with European officials on domestic reform issues amid major disagreements resulting from the delayed bailout review.

One of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras's biggest 2015 pre-election pledges was that he would not make privatizations or sell state assets.

Despite this, the SYRIZA-led government has sold the state railroad, Piraeus Port, other assets for even less that what previous conservative governments had negotiated. -
