Greek Pm Says 'Referendum İs Still On'

01.07.2015 18:03

In a televised speech, Tsipras has said that the referendum would get a better deal for Greece.

Greek Prime Minister AlexisTsipras spoke on television on Wednesday, telling Greeks that the referendum would still be held on Sunday, a move which he claimed was not about staying in the euro.

Tsipras stressed that the government still aimed for an agreement with creditors and "remains at the negotiating table".

He said that holding the referendum would obtain a better deal for Greece.

Earlier, Tsipras was reported to have written a letter to eurozone government heads, accepting most of the terms of the creditors' latest bailout offer made on Saturday.

The letter was leaked after Greece defaulted on its obligations to the International Monetary Fund -- the first developed country to ever do so -- and after the 2010 bailout had already ended.

In the letter, leaked to the Financial Times, Tsipras accepts most of the creditors' conditions, but still asks for a number of changes that could wreck the deal.

Tsipras is also asking for a new bailout worth €29.1 billion . - Ankara
