The president of Greece has visited Greek Cyprus on his first official visit abroad, during which he had a meeting with Greek Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades underlining his country's determination to support Cyprus in its efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue.

Visiting Nicosia on Monday as one of his first acts after assuming office earlier in March, President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos had a meeting with Anastasiades at the presidential mansion, after which the president of the Hellenic Republic said in a press conference that the “brotherly ties” between Cyprus and Greece are unbreakable and can only grow stronger though the common challenges that two nations are facing.

Turkish and Greek Cyprus have been trying for decades to end more than 40 years of division with UN support, but have multiple disagreements to resolve. The Greek president stopped the negotiations between the two parties that resumed in February after the alleged violation of Greek Cyprus' territorial waters by the Turkish seismic research vessel Barbaros.

However, hopes arose when Special Adviser of the UN Secretary-General on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide spoke to the Greek press recently, stating that the negotiations between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots, which resulted in a joint declaration being issued in February 2014 as a step to end the Cyprus dispute and reunify the island, will resume from where they left off. Eide also said the leaders of the negotiating parties will choose the format in which the discussions will recommence.

Eide told the Greek press that he had had the chance to speak with both parties involved in the negotiations and believed both sides had shown interest in restarting the negotiations, and also that the breakup of the negotiations had given the sides a chance to reconsider the situation.

The negotiations ended when the Greek Cypriot side pulled out of the negotiations in October 2014, claiming Turkey has been conducting exploration activities in its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the eastern Mediterranean in a growing row over the hydrocarbon reserves off the island. Turkey, which does not recognize the Greek Cypriot administration, says the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC) is also entitled to the island's energy riches and promises to defend the KKTC's rights.
