Greek people began to go to the polling stations as of Sunday morning to determine if the country should accept the terms and conditions of a bailout with its creditors.

Around 10 voters across the country are expected to cast their votes between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. More people than expected have casted votes so far.

The Greek government decided to hold a referendum as no agreement has been reached with the creditors after five months.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras called on citizens to say "no" in the popular vote that he believes will give him strong leverage in his negotiations with creditors — the EU and the International Monetary Fund — to swing a softer bailout deal.

Speaking to Cihan news agency, a Greek people living in İstanbul named Vironas, 60, stated that she voted for “no” for the future of their children, education and health.

Another citizen named Tilio, 70, said she cast her vote for her grandchildren. She also criticized that closure of banks and giving 120 euro for the pensioner is not acceptable.

Preliminary result of the referendum is due to be announced at 9 p.m.. For the referendum to be valid, at least 40 percent of registered voters must turn out.
