Gülsün Karamustafa Among Laureates Of Prince Claus Awards

Contemporary Turkish artist Gülsün Karamustafa has become one of the recipients of the 2014 Prince Claus Awards, presented annually by Amsterdam's Prince Claus Fund for Culture and Development.The 68-year-old artist was praised for her paintings, videos and installations. “Her body of works stands out for its nuanced treatment of socio-political issues in modern Turkey, such as gender and sexuality, ethnicity and exile, and the role of secularism and religion in society,” according to a post on the profile created for Karamustafa on the fund's website.

Prince Claus Awards are given to 11 individuals or organizations whose cultural actions contribute to the development of their societies.

Late archaeologist Halet Çambel and record producer Hasan Saltık were the former Turkish recipients of the award, launched in 1996 and named in honor of late Prince Claus of the Netherlands, who died in 2002.
